Learning Korean in South Korea isn’t just for everyday life. The official certification program is also the key to your permanent residency and future naturalization. It’s called KIIP (사회통합프로그램, Korea Immigration & Integration Program), administered by the Ministry of Justice.
It’s the most recognized Korean language course within the country’s entire immigration system.
How the program works
KIIP has six levels, from 0 to 5. Levels 0 to 4 cover Korean from beginner to advanced, and level 5 focuses on understanding Korean society, with a 70-hour basic course and an additional 30-hour intensive course. In total, it provides approximately 465 hours of training.
Before starting, you take a placement test (사전평가) to determine your level. However, if you already have a valid TOPIK certificate, you can skip the test and go directly to the appropriate level. The course itself is free or very low cost.
The only fees you pay are the exam fees: 38,000 won per assessment (placement test, midterm exam, or final assessment). Legal foreign residents with an alien registration card or domestic residence permit, as well as naturalized citizens within the first three years of naturalization, can enroll. Registration is done online through Hi Korea (hikorea.
go. kr) or the Socinet portal (socinet. go.
kr). The most important information for your immigration process: completing KIIP Level 4 is recognized as proof of language proficiency for your F-5 permanent residence application. Completing the full Level 5 (basic plus intensive) and passing the final assessment exempts you from the written exam and the naturalization interview.
If you want to progress faster than the pace of the public course, there are also private language academies and online Korean tutors, a good complementary option while you wait for your spot at KIIP or need to brush up before an important assessment.
