These tips can improve your living and working life in South Korea

If you already have a work or residence visa in South Korea, the next logical step is the F-5, Korean permanent residency. It’s not a single category; there are more than 16 different pathways depending on your circumstances. The standard pathway (F-5-1) requires at least five years of continuous legal residence in the country.

You need an annual income equal to or greater than the Gross National Income per capita (GNI), which is projected to be around 22 to 25 million won in 2026, and you must have completed Level 5 of the Korean Immigration and Nationality Institute (KIIP) or scored at least 60 points on the comprehensive assessment for residency or naturalization.

Fastest pathways based on your profile in South Korea

If you have Korean ancestry and an F-4 visa, the F-5-7 pathway only requires two years of continuous residence, and you are completely exempt from demonstrating Korean language proficiency. From February 2026, if you certify a good level of Korean and have a volunteer history, the income requirement is reduced to 60-80% of the standard GNI. If you arrived through marriage to a Korean citizen (F-6 visa), you can apply for an F-5 visa after two years with an F-2 or F-3 visa, provided you have already obtained your Korean language course certificate (KIIP or TOPIK) and meet the income requirement.

There is also the F-5-16 points-based route, designed for foreign workers in general, regardless of their ancestry. Its advantage over other residency visas is that, once approved, you do not need to undergo a points-based evaluation each time you renew. In all cases, a check is also made to ensure you have no criminal record abroad, that you are enrolled in the national health insurance system, and that you have no outstanding tax or insurance debts.

Once your F-5 visa is approved, your residency does not expire, although the physical card must be renewed every ten years. You do not need to retake the language exam or re-prove your income level for this renewal. If your situation involves a background check, changes to your work visa, or complex income documentation, it is advisable to consult a visa application specialist (행정사) or an immigration attorney before submitting your application.
